Opeth é uma banda de death metal e metal progressivo originária da Suécia, formada em 1990. Os trabalhos da banda se caracterizam pelo contraste que surge entre os elementos mais leves de violão, canto e jazz, combinados à agressividade do death metal. Além das peculiaridades que tornam a sonoridade da banda algo singular, os temas por ela abordados se focam em aspectos sombrios da subjetividade humana, tais como angústia, medo, remorso e outras formas de sofrimento presentes em gêneros musicais mais sentimentalistas e melancólicos como o doom metal e outras ramificações da música gótica, fato que gera controvérsia sobre a real natureza da banda. Suas canções são fortemente marcadas por elementos oníricos que, somados à uma atmosfera inebriante e envolvente, transmitem a nebulosa sensação de devaneio. Seu vocalista e principal guitarrista é Mikael Åkerfeldt, que alterna constantemente entre o vocal gutural e o vocal limpo.

O nome Opeth é uma referência ao livro "Sunbird", de Wilbur Smith. A banda vêm fazendo parcerias recentemente com o aclamado artista Steven Wilson, inclusive na produção e execução de seus últimos álbums.
